The achievement of a multi ethnic legal profession conscious of
differences and committed to equality is the mission of the ABA
Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession.
Projects and programs assist minorities in attaining a legal
education and bar admission, foster employment and career
opportunities, and encourage hiring by law firms, corporations, the
government, and other businesses. Increasing minority involvement
in bar associations at the national, state, and local levels and
with minority and specialty bar associations is a key goal.
The National Conference for the Minority Lawyer,
cosponsored with the ABA Section Business Law, is held each year
for litigators, business lawyers, in-house counsel, and government.
It offers practical training sessions, career development
workshops, and cutting-edge, substantive CLE programming. The
Minority Counsel Program encourages corporations to retain
lawyers of color; it holds two major meetings a year, conducts CLE
programs, and offers a listserve and other services.
The Conference of Minority Partners welcomes
African-American, Hispanic American, Asian Pacific Islander
American, and American Indian partners in majority corporate law
firms with 25 lawyers or more. The Minority In-House Counsel
Group is a national network of minority lawyers working in
corporations and governmental agencies. Other programs include the
Spirit of Excellence Award, the Judicial Clerkship Program, and the
Multicultural Women Attorneys Network.
The quarterly newsletter, Goal IX, covers ABA
initiatives, federal policies, and programs of importance to
minority lawyers and provides a forum for new ideas. An annual
Goal IX Report examines minority participation in the ABA as
members, speakers, and leaders. To sign up for programs and
listserves, please visit the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic
Diversity in the Profession at http://www.abanet.org/minorities/join/home.html.
