Through education and advocacy, the Section of Individual Rights
and Responsibilities of the American Bar Association expresses
the profession's commitment to achieving through the legal
system the American ideals of justice, freedom, and equality for
all.
The Section raises and addresses complex civil rights and civil
liberties issues, and it ensures that protection of individual
rights remains a focus of legal and policy decisions. Individual
Rights creates and manages projects such as the AIDS Coordination
Project, the Death Penalty Moratorium Implementation Project, U.S.
ratification of the U.N. Women's Rights Treaty (CEDAW), and the
Thurgood Marshall Award. Much of the Section's work centers on
ABA policy development and implementation.
CLE programs are offered at the ABA's Midyear and Annual
Meetings. These focus on cutting-edge civil and human rights and
civil liberties issues. Many of the programs treat issues addressed
in proposed policy resolutions up for debate in the ABA House of
Delegates. In addition, the Section has 19 committees for those who
want to get involved in the substantive work of the Section.
Two quarterlies are sent to Section members. Human Rights
is an award-winning magazine and one of the first legal periodicals
devoted exclusively to individual rights and civil liberties
issues. IRR News Report, a newsletter, reports on issues and
carries Section news and updates on legislative and U. S. Supreme
Court developments.
Through its activities and publications, the Section nurtures a
sense of responsibility on the part of lawyers, both personally and
professionally, to help ensure equality of justice for all. For
