Divorce, custody, adoption, alimony, and support are among the
traditional matters addressed by the ABA Section of Family
Law; and newer issues such as third party parental rights,
marital torts, federal and interstate legislation, mediation, and
the complicated questions of paternity, perinatal drug addiction,
and reproductive technologies are also covered. Family law cases
use more actual courtroom time than any other area of civil law,
and the Section works constantly to keep its members fully informed
about changes in the field.
The 10,000 member Section has over 25 substantive committees
members may join that address areas such as family support, family
courts, adoption, custody, taxation, domestic violence, and
military law among other issues. Each meets three times a year, and
most sponsor an annual one-hour CLE program.
The Section of Family Law sponsors three CLE Conferences
annually and the Family Law Advocacy Institute, a trial skills
training course. Members meet family law practitioners from around
the country and are eligible for significant registration
discounts. Telephone seminars are also offered periodically.
Members receive two quarterlies: Family Advocate, a
magazine addressing current family law topics, and Family Law
Quarterly, a scholarly periodical offering legal analyses of
timely subjects. Family Law Case Update, a monthly
newsletter, focuses on recent cases. Books on all aspects of family
law are published.
The Section sponsors three listserves that let members discuss
cases and law practice management issues via e-mail. Academicians,
the general public, attorneys, and law students use the
Section's homepage as a research tool. Recommendations for
standards of practice and enactment of legislation brought to the
ABA House of Delegates by the Section have contributed to a number
of Association policy positions. For more information about
