The Section of
Science and Technology Law of the American Bar Association is a
trusted source of information and policy development at the
intersection of law, science, and technology. The Section leads the
profession in defining the legal landscape of these often uncharted
areas and is home to lawyers with diverse backgrounds in areas such
as computer law, electronic commerce, engineering, biotechnology,
physics, and medicine.
The work of the Section is conducted through four substantive
divisions (e-commerce law, computer law, communications law, and
life and physical sciences) and 26 committees and task forces,
which explore the legal implications of technical and scientific
discoveries and developments. Members may join any of the
substantive committees, which serve as project working groups and
host the listserves open to them.
Through programs, projects, and publications, the Section
explores issues such as e-commerce privacy and public key
infrastructure, the scope of electronic notarial practice, online
payment mechanisms like smart cards and digital cash, law and the
Internet, information security and privacy, telecommunications law,
cybercrime, biotechnology, scientific misconduct, scientific
evidence, and genetics. During the Midyear and Annual Meetings, the
Section offers programs on timely topics such "Human Clones
and the Law: From Embryos and Stem Cells to Duplicate and Designer
Babies."
The journal Jurimetrics and a newsletter BLAST (The
Bulletin of Law, Science and Technology) are sent quarterly to
members. They disseminate information about the relationships
between law, science, medicine, and technology. BLAST offers
news about Section business and activities and is also online.
The latest research and work of special Section committees is
published in monographs as part of the Scientific Evidence
Review series. For more information about member benefits and
