The American Bar Association is
the largest voluntary professional membership association in the
world. With more than 400,000 members, the ABA provides law school
accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the
law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and
initiatives to improve the legal system for the public. The ABA
strives to provide members with the knowledge and tools they need
for their professional development and career growth. From
ABA-sponsored conferences, meetings, seminars and CLE sessions to a
wide variety of respected publications to a state-of-the-art Web
site, the ABA is dedicated to helping lawyers advance their careers
and the profession as a whole.
Members receive the monthly award-winning ABA Journal and
those who have provided an e-mail address also receive the weekly
ABA Journal eReport by e-mail. Forty states require
mandatory CLE, and the ABA offers outstanding programming, from the
more traditional modes of national institutes, satellite and
"VideoLaw" seminars to teleconferences and online
formats, including audio, video, and live and on-demand Web
casts.
Eligibility to join the 34 special interest sections, divisions,
and forums is a key reason lawyers join and remain members of the
Association. Sections and divisions range in size from 3,100
members to more than 63,300. They address professional development
and improvement of laws, provide CLE, and offer outstanding
publications that include 14 magazines, 40 newsletters, four
annuals, and 12 professional journals. Sections contribute to the
making of ABA policy, and many of the recommendations that become
the ABA policy positions originate in the sections.
Member programs, customized services, authoritative
publications, and discounted products are available to members at
all career stages - whether entering the field, beginning or
expanding a practice, changing specialties or work settings, or
planning for retirement or a second career. The ABA Career Resource
Center Web site offers information about finding jobs and enhancing
careers. For more about membership benefits, see http://www.abanet.org/abasource/guide.html.
