Description: IP monetization encompasses the various strategies firms use to generate cash flows from intangible assets such as patents and brands. Traditionally, firms have focused their IP monetization efforts on licensing and enforcement or the outright sale of their non-core IP assets. More recently, as the business community has become increasingly attuned to the untapped value of the IP asset class, firms have begun using the techniques of corporate finance to derive revenue from their IP. As a result, the IP markets have witnessed an uptick in the number of transactions involving IP-based lending, royalty stream securitizations, IP spinouts, and the syndication of litigation interests.
Thomson Reuters IP Solutions has brought together this panel in order to provide the audience with an economic, business, and legal perspective on the IP monetization landscape. Among the topics of discussion:
• Current trends in IP monetization • Case studies of exemplary transactions involving IP monetization • The various ways businesses, research universities, and inventors use corporate finance to maximize the revenue they derive from intangible assets • Best practices in the calculation of lost profits and reasonable royalty damages in patent infringement lawsuits • A report from the 2009 IP Business Conference, an annual gathering of professionals and thought leaders working in IP markets
Moderator: • Ric Snead – Product Specialist/Patent Agent, Thomson Scientific
Panel: • Marc Lucier, Director, Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. • Bryan Ray, Vice President, NERA Economic Consulting • Jorge M. Torres, Associate, Fish & Richardson P.C.
